History of Modern Yoga
Today, we think of yoga as a science or as a healthy practice. Before the 20th century, many “respectable” people thought of yoga as a way of doing magic or as sexual rituals. Discussion will focus on how these shifts occurred to produce a form of Yoga the modern world is most familiar with today. The story begins in India in the early 20th century, where a few people took an interest in modernizing yoga. They wanted to get yoga away from its associations with magic and sex and instead pursue Yoga’s health benefits based on scientific findings and practice. Yoga’s modernization continued in Europe and North America. From the beginning, South Asians were influenced by Europeans and North Americans, and Europeans and North Americans were influenced by South Asians

South Asian refers to (as seen in wikipedia) countries of the Indian sub-continent. Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, etc.
When we turn to physical practice, we will be keeping in mind the question of why we practice yoga. (hint: there are no wrong answers.) The movements and postures will reflect both what is familiar from Iyengar, Kripalu, and Mysore/Ashtanga styles and the recent innovations of Diane Bruni, who trained extensively in Iyengar and Mysore/Ashtanga before developing her own style over the last ten years.
Beginners are welcome. Please wear layered clothing comfortable for movement and sitting.
