10 Week Study and Practice Sessions
November 6 – January 22

The last 150 years of yoga’s history are receiving a lot of attention from contemporary scholars. Revelations from this research have caused some modern yogis to ask big questions about why they practice and what to practice. Deepen your studies with Power and the Body in Modern Yoga History.
Simon Jo-Keeling (simonrjk.blogspot.ca) has been practicing yoga and meditation for sixteen years and was trained as a yoga teacher by Diane Bruni. He has a PhD in anthropology which he brings to bear in discussing and understanding yoga research.
His passions for anthropology and Yoga have led him down the curious path of studying Yoga’s roots and growth- from the East to the West. This 10 week on and off the mat study course called will blend gentle physical practice with discussion of research by Andrea Jain, Mark Singleton, and Joseph Alter on the history of modern yoga and what it’s surprising evolution may mean for your practice.
Readings will be provided in the cost of this course as we navigate through chapters of Yoga Body: the Origins of Modern Posture Practice by Mark Singleton . Each class will be split with one hour of group discussion first, followed by an hour of practice to embody the teachings and further explore. .
When we turn to the physical practice in these classes we will be keeping in mind the question of why we practice yoga. (hint: there are no wrong answers.) The movements and postures will reflect both what is familiar from Iyengar, Kripalu, and Mysore/Ashtanga styles and the recent innovations of Diane Bruni, who trained extensively in Iyengar and Mysore/Ashtanga before developing her own style over the last ten years.
Beginners are welcome. Please wear layered clothing comfortable for movement and sitting.
